LLINs

What is a Long-Lasting Insecticidal Net (LLIN)?

An LLIN is a mosquito net impregnated with insecticide.

The insecticide is cleverly bound within the fibres that make up the netting and is 'slow released' over a 4-5 year period. Hence 'long lasting'.

Pre-distribution information

Ghana is badly affected by malaria. It is the number one killer in the country.

8,000 nets will be delivered via six related distributions in the villages of Sapeliga (1,500 LLINs), Kobore (1,000), Tomonde (1,500), Sakote (1,000), Pwaligu (1,000) and Tamperi (2,000), all in the Upper East Region of Ghana.

Children under 5 and pregnant women, who are particularly vulnerable to malaria, will be the main beneficiaries.

Post-distribution information

The distribution was completed successfully as planned. A total of eight thousand (8000) nets were distributed in six (6) communities in the Upper East Region of Ghana.

It is expected that the effective use of the bed nets by beneficiaries will protect them from mosquito attacks and thereby reduce the malaria burden in target communities.

Follow-up surveys

These take place 6, 18, 30 and 42 months post-distribution. A survey of 50 households provides sample information on what proportion of nets continue to be used, if they are used correctly and the state of the nets.
