LLINs

What is a Long-Lasting Insecticidal Net (LLIN)?

An LLIN is a mosquito net impregnated with insecticide.

The insecticide is cleverly bound within the fibres that make up the netting and is 'slow released' over a 4-5 year period. Hence 'long lasting'.

Gatamba, Burundi...

Crowds gather at the distribution...

More arrive...

Nets are opened before handing out...

Paperwork is checked...

Names are checked...

Almost ready to begin...

Waiting patiently...

My turn soon...

Nets are distributed...

Protecting those at risk...

Again...

And again...

And again...

And again...

With our nets...

Taking them back home...

This way...

Back home...

Nets hung...

A second distribution...

Nets are unloaded...

More crowds gather...

Waiting for the start...

Nets are ready...

The distribution begins

People queue...

A little tiring for some...

Nets handed out...

Another...

And another...

Pre-distribution information

Gatumba has a population of 25,000 and is located in a malaria endemic region. 1,500 cases of malaria are reported per month. 90% of children under 2 do not sleep under a bednet. Gatumba does not have a hospital.

The 10,000 LLINs that comprise the Gatumba distribution will ensure blanket coverage of the village in one go. All areas of Gatumba will receive nets, namely: Kinyana I and II, Rukaramo, Waribondo, Muyange, Mushasha, Gaharawe and Vugizo.

This will be a mass distribution, completed over a period of one week, through collaboration between Community Health Workers (CHWs), community leaders and local administrators. Pre-distribution social mobilisation sessions on net use will be held one week before distribution. Non-announced, post-distribution follow-up will ensure the nets are being used and are correctly hung.

Follow-up surveys

These take place 6, 18, 30 and 42 months post-distribution. A survey of 50 households provides sample information on what proportion of nets continue to be used, if they are used correctly and the state of the nets.
