Heavy rains and subsequent widespread flooding in Malawi in January 2015 left 79 people dead, 153 missing in one district, 174,000 people displaced in three districts and 638,000 people affected. A state of emergency was declared in 15 of Malawi's 28 districts. It quickly became apparent malaria would be a significant problem in affected and displaced communities, with worrying data being reported from the lead emergency agencies on the ground. An initial estimate of the immediate net need to protect people from malaria was 200,000 nets. AMF was one of the few organisations with nets in country and had the largest stock, 400,000 nets, in Dowa District ready for a distribution there six weeks hence. Appropriate accountability was agreed with the distribution partners and agencies that would take responsibility for the nets and AMF agreed to support the emergency effort gifting 150,000 nets to close the net need gap and allow immediate movement of the nets.

Post-distribution
The two objectives of post-distribution activity are i) to monitor and report on
the continued use of the nets (achieved via six-monthly Post-Distribution net use
and condition Check-Ups (PDCUs) which collect data from 5% of the households, randomly
selected and visited unannounced, that received nets during the distribution) and
ii) to assess the impact in terms of reduced malaria to which the nets contribute
(achieved via monthly malaria case rate and mortality data, received quarterly).
